ALFIE GARFORD DOUBLES UP IN JCW SPORT WITH SECOND DONINGTON SUCCESS

Alfie Garford made it two wins from two in JCW Sport with another dominant success in the second Power Maxed MINI CHALLENGE race of the weekend at Donington Park.

Having taken top honours in the opening race on Saturday, Garford lined up third in class for the reverse grid encounter but nailed the start when the lights went out to grab the lead on the run down to turn one ahead of Chris Mackenzie and pole sitter Murray Richardson.

Garford moved into the top 20 overall on the opening lap and was able to put a number of JCW cars between himself and the remainder of the Sport field, which provided the teenager with some breathing space as the race wore on.

As on Saturday, Garford showed strong pace to remain with the tail of the JCW field and took the flag in 15th overall to take a second Sport win.

“It all happened at the start,” he said. “I managed to get away well from the line and was able to play with the JCWs for a bit, which meant I got to break clear of my rivals.

“The JCWs pulled away which I expected but I knew I had plenty of space behind me – it’s a good result.”

Whereas Mackenzie had enjoyed a somewhat lonely run to second spot in race one, it was a different situation altogether in race two as Richardson kept him honest throughout.

The battle between the pair would also involve the rear of the JCW field, with the OX4 Racing car of Alex Brandham in the fight for overall positions on the road.

More than once, Richardson was able to close onto the rear of Mackenzie’s car but couldn’t get close enough to make a move for position, allowing Mackenzie to bag the runner-up spot.

“It wasn’t ideal to be caught up with the JCW cars because it meant Murray was right on my tail, but it was a fun race,” he said. “We haven’t tested since the end of last season so are struggling a bit with set-up on the car with the new F66 kits fitted, which means we haven’t got an answer for Alfie’s pace at the moment. We’re working on it.”

After his dramas in the opening race of the weekend, Eden Spanswick was able to bring his car to the finish in fourth spot for Speedworks to give him much needed time behind the wheel.
